He married (1) MEHITABLE WATERMAN Abt. 1646, daughter of RICHARD* WATERMAN and BETHIAH WAITE. She was born 1626 in Salem, MA, and died 03 Dec 1683 in Providence, RI. He married (2) HOWLONG HARRIS 16 Dec 1684, daughter of WILLIAM HARRIS and SUSANNAH (HARRIS). She was born 1620, and died 19 Nov 1708 in Providence, RI. Notes for CAPTAIN ARTHUR FENNER: There is a "tradition" in the Fenner family that Arthur served as lieutenant of a troop of horse in Oliver Cromwell's army. This is possible, as the Civil War in England was fought between 1642 and 1649. Richard Waterman was in Salem in 1629, so it is possible that Arthur met and married his bride in the New World. Arthur first appears in the public record at Providence in 1649 (PROV.REC. II:10). In 1650, he purchased land from Nathaniel Dickens, amounting to six acres upland and two spot of meadow (PROV.REC.II:10). On 27 April 1652, he purchased 150 acres from John Lippitt and Hugh Bewitt (AUSTIN). He occupied Lippitt's house lot, which was bounded on the north by that of Bewitt and on the south by John Street. Lippitt moved, at this time, to Warwick. Also at this time, Arthur took delivery of a number of barrels of rum, a quantity of sugar, a panier and a horse collar, shipped in on the sloop owned by Providence Williams, son of Roger (SHIPS). On 7 March 1651-2, he and eleven others (Thomas Harris, William Wickenden, John Browne, Samuel Bennett, Henry Browne, Thomas Hopkins, James Ashton, Thomas Angell, Gregory Dexter, Hugh Bewitt and Edward Inman) signed the Providence Oath of Allegiance. These twelve men held the Colony together while Roger Williams was in England, concerning the matter of Coddington's coup d'etat. William Coddington had obtained a life commission as Governor of Portsmouth and Newport (The Colony of Rhode Island), abrogating the original Royal Charter. Williams went to England to complain and to petition for the reinstatement of the Providence Plantations into the Colony. The Oath of Allegiance read: "I do declare and Promise That I will be True & ffaithfull to the Comonwealth of England, as it is now Establised, without a King or house of Lords." A second oath was signed at Warwick, 8 March 1652-3. Williams was successful in his petition. The original twelve signers of the Oath were an exemplary group of men. They constituted one-third of the Freemen of the Town of Providence. All six Commissionners were signers; two more signers would be elected Commissionners within six months; and the other four would later be elected (PROV OATH). Arthur Fenner was elected Commissionner in 1653, gathering a total of eleven votes on his behalf. In 1654, in partnership with Henry Brown, Arthur Fenner bought "four and twenty" acres from William Burrows. A year later he was granted three acres of salt marsh by the Town of Providence, if he paid the sum of four shillings. It is not recorded whether he paid the shillings. That same year (1655) he was listed on a roll of Freemen (COL.REC. I:299), although it is likely he was a Freeman before this time. In 1656, Arthur, his brother William, and Christopher Smith had additional lands granted to them. Also in 1656, there was another episode in a long continuation of similar confrontations between Massachusetts and Rhode Island. The Massachusetts authorities claimed jurisdiction over areas considered to be part of the Providence Plantations. Some inhabitants of the area voluntarily submitted to the Massachusetts jurisdiction, but others bitterly resisted and resented these incursions. In 1656, a Marshal Waite was sent from Massachusetts to arrest one Richard Chasmore, who lived outside Providence. Waite, with his prisoner, paused at Providence for the evening on their way back to Massachusetts. Arthur Fenner, the Chief Magistrate, convened a meeting and declared that Chasmore was beyond the jurisdiction of the Massachusetts courts and ordered that Chasmore be taken from Waite and allowed to return to his home. "As leader of public sentiment, Fenner had the good fortune to represent the Rhode Island feeling, which has always been exceedingly strong. He was for Rhode Island first, last, and always." (ROOT #1) On 19 May 1657, Arthur was chosen First Assistant from Providence to the Governor of the Colony. He was to occupy this office nineteen times in future years, serving also as Deputy for nine years and Commissioner for eight years. From 1657 to the date of his death, it is unusual to find a year in which Arthur was not serving in one of these positions. He also served as Town Treasurer and as a member of the Town Council. He apparently was very well educated for his time, and was a competent surveyor and engineer as well. In 1699, he was chosen to serve on the committee to lay out the western boundary of the Colony and he served on another committee which dealt with land purchases from Indians. And, in 1661, he was on the committee to arbitrate with Pawtuxet, over the question on the boundary lines (ROOT #1). The continuing feud between Rhode Island and Massachusetts flared again in 1662. In that year Arthur was on a committee charged with answering a letter sent to the Rhode Islanders by the Massachusetts people. About this time, some of the Providence residents were pushing out from the original settlement and clearing roads and fields and building homes in the wilderness (ROOT#1). Arthur Fenner went about four miles west of the center of Providence and found a spot with a brook (called the Ocquochomaug) nearby and a knoll upon which he built a house. The area was known later as Simmonsville and Thornton, and eventually became part of the Town of Johnston (FENNER CASTLE). The house was a small affair, facing south. It had a massive and impressive chimney. This house stood until King Philip's War, when it was burned by the Indians. From 1663 to 1689, Arthur was the principal magistrate of the colonial government (ROOT #1). On 17 December 1664, Arthur was granted the Meere bank, from the corner of his fence, around the point, to a "Creeke or Coave lieing next unto Wachamoquett poynt" upon condition that he would lay "downe so much land in another place for the Townes use; And also to make Three Stiles, one by his Howse, another at the hollow neere Wachamoquott poynt, and another at the aforesaid Creeke ore Coave And that people May have Liberty to passe Trough on foot or upon oCation to Land Goodes upoon the said Land." (PROV.REC.LLL:59) This apparently refers to the salt marsh adjacent to his Providence lands. The "stiles" were evidently turnstiles, installed to allow free passage of pedestrians. And the writer covered his uncertainty over the name of the "poynt" by spelling it two different ways, in hopes that one of them might be correct. On 19 February 1665, Arthur was granted an additional lot in a division of lands (PROV REC III:72). In 1667, he swore allegiance to King Charles II (PROV.REC. 111:101). That year he also served as Moderator of the Town Meeting, a position that he was often to occupy during the remainer of his life. In 1670, the General Assembly noted that there was some confusion between Arthur Fenner and William Harris as to which of them was chosen Second Assistant. Being a true body of politicians, the General Assembly chose the safe course and avoided taking a side, appointing Roger Williams to serve instead. The next year, Arthur was chosen as Assistant and the General Assembly passed a resolution that, in the event that Providence failed or neglected to select a person to make an assessment on the Town of Providence, then Arthur Fenner would be appointed. Providence neglected to select anyone that year, and Arthur was appointed. In 1676, there is an indication that Arthur Fenner and John Coggeshall tied for the position of Assistant, but that Fenner won the run-off election. On 19 June 1676, Governor Clarke appointed Arthur Fenner "Chiefe Commander of the King's Garrison at Providence, and of all other private garrison or garrisons there . . . and have hereby full power and sole command of the soldiers belonging to that garrison (ROOT #1)." He was given the title of Captain and he had a force of seven men at his command: John Morey, Thomas Fenner (likely Arthur's son), Henry Asten, William Lancaster, Samuel Winson, Arthur Fenner Jr. and Thomas Wallen (FENNER HOUSES). On 26 October 1676, he and the soldiers of the garrison at Providence were discharged from further duty (COL.REC. II:552). After King Philip's War, Captain Arthur was a member of the Court Martial, held 24 August 1676, at Newport, that prosecuted Indians who consented to selling their captives into slavery. As punishment, the Indians were convicted and sentenced to serve as slaves and servants of the colonists, for varying terms. (ROOT #1) During the war, Arthur's house was burned to the ground, although the massive chimney was intact. The family, like so many others, had been safely removed to the island of Rhode Island during the hostilities, but apparently all of their possessions were lost. The Council of the United Colonies granted Arthur relief (16 March 1676), allowing his brother John to transport twenty bushels of corn to Rhode Island for the benefit of his brother (AUSTIN). This date may be a year or two off from the correct date, as Roger Williams wrote to the Council on Arthur's behalf, dated 25 August 1678: "I am requested by my dear friend and neighbor, Capt. Fenner, of Providence, to be your remembrancer, praying for Effectual consideration of his case. Capt. Fenner had lost his housing and cattle, but his Stacks of hay (twenty-two) and his fencing, &c. God suffered the Pagans not to destroy, but your Army (against their wills) found it necessary to fodder their horses and make themselves Lodging with the twenty-two Stacks, and to make themselves fires with all of his fencing and with whatever was about the farm Combustible. ... it is unchristian and inhuman that any one of the King's subjects should (after his great losses by the pagans) bear so great a burden alone, to which the whole Country ought to put the Shoulder. Capt.Fenner (in some hopes of relief) hath laid his demand so low that it speaks him wise and moderate and sensible of your Country's Burthens. (ROOT #1)" Despite the great losses, Arthur apparently recovered very quickly from this situation. He constructed a second house around the original chimney. The chimney was twelve foot square around the base, and the unusual construction of the top gave the appearance of having turrets and the like. As a result, the second house came to be known as the Fenner "Castle" and the chimney was to outlast this second house, and was still standing in the 1880s. The house itself was a rather modest affair, having two storeys and but one room per storey. The appointments of the house did show the wealth and position of Capt. Arthur. All of the nails and hinges were imported from England, as were the diamond-shaped leaded glass windows, set into metal frames (A section of one of the windows is supposed to have been given to the Rhode Island Historical Society; RI GUIDE). The beams of the house were oak and measured twelve inches by thirteen inches (FENNER CASTLE). The "Castle" passed through six generations, spanning almost 200 years, and never left the Fenner family. It was owned, in turn, by: Captain Arthur; his sons Arthur (1658-1725) and Major Thomas (1653-1718); Major Thomas' son, Thomas Fenner; his son Samuel Fenner (1710-1803) known as "the conjurer"; his son Samuel Fenner (1736-1824); and Samuel's children, Samuel (1765-1846), Benjamin (1774- ), and Mary "Polly" (1766-1861). None of the last three had any children and when Polly died the house was abandoned. It fell into ruins around the magnificent chimney. The remains were razed in 1895 (RI GUIDE), over 225 years after the first house was built on the site. Today the site is in the midst of an urban neighborhood, and the only reminder of its former greatness is the cemetary where Capt. Arthur and some of his descendants are buried. The cemetary is located on Britton Street, between Tweed and Fletcher Streets, a short distance from the Plainfield Pike. There are several tombstones left standing and legible, bearing the names of : John and Eleazar (sons of Major Thomas and Dinah Fenner); Sarah, daughter of Ezekiel Warner and wife of Thomas Fenner Jr., the grandson of Major Thomas Fenner and the son of Thomas and Mary (Abbott) Fenner; Mary, the daughter of Capt. John Jenckes and Sarah Fenner, the daughter of Major Thomas Fenner; Mary "Polly" Fenner, the last resident of the "Castle." The cemetary is designated as a historical cemetary (#40) (and is well kept - RGHK3 visit in 1978). On 31 October 1677, Captain Arthur was again appointed Commander of the Providence garrison and was allowed up to 100 pounds of lead bullets and a barrel of powder. He was allowed an additional barrel of powder the next year (ROOT #1). On 5 January 1680, the Town Council of the Town of Providence recorded that "Captain Arthur Fenner presented to ye said Council the last Will and testament of his dec' Brother William Fenner which said will beareth the date ye 30 day of August 1680." Arthur and his brother John divided their brother's lands, Arthur taking the properties located in Rhode Island and John taking the Connecticut lands. Arthur then deeded 92 acres to his daughters, Phebe and Bethiah, as part of their uncle's legacies (AUSTIN). On 5 May 1680, Captain Arthur was appointed to a committee to draw up, organize and print all of the laws and acts of the Colony of Rhode Island (COL.REC. III:863). In 1683, the incursions into Rhode Island and Providence Plantations continued, but this time from New Hampshire. Captain Arthur was on a committee "to consider what shall be done concerning the usurping of power by Governor Edward Cranfield of New Hampshire (COL.REC. III:134)" The Governor of Rhode Island, with the Deputy Governor and the eight Assistants, of whom Captain Arthur was one, sent Cranfield a warning suggesting that Cranfield avoid any further attempts to annex territory within the Colony of Rhode Island., They also sent a letter to the King (ROOT #1). On 10 September 1683, the General Assembly chose former Governor Peleg Stanford and Captain Arthur Fenner as agents to go to England to report directly to the King. There is no indication that they ever went, although a tax of 400 pounds was passed to finance the trip (FENNER HOUSES). Mehitable died 3 December 1683, and Captain Arthur married (16 December 1684) Howlong Harris. H.L.Pratt notes: "History says that he (Captain Arthur) carried on an almost endless legal warfare with his special enemy, one William Harris, a Patuxet settler and ended by marrying the daughter Howlong for his second wife." Captain Arthur and Howlong had no children. In 1687-88, Captain Arthur was Justice of the Quarter Sessions and Inferior Court of Common Pleas (ROOT #1). In 1688, his rateable estate was set at: 300 acres woodlands, 20 acres wild pasture, 10 acres English pasture, 3 acres orchard and meadow and 5 acres planting (AUSTIN). The General Assembly, 2 July 1695, appointed Captain Arthur Fenner, Thomas Olney and Richard Arnold a committee to set the northern boundaries of the Colony (COL.REC.). Captain Arthur made his will on 3 September 1703, at Providence. The total value was estimated at 166 pounds: 5 cows, 6 calves, 4 heifers, abundant farm implements, 2 spinning wheels and cards, 9 books (including a Bible), 12 barrels of cider, 2 barrels of peach juice, 5 barrels of beer and 12 empty barrels. To his widow he left "one cow, the best she can choose from my herd," 10 pounds per year for life, "one room in any house I own" and all household goods. His lands were left to his sons (AUSTIN). There is a tradition that he carved his initials in a stone, which was placed on his grave and there apparently was at one time such a stone in the graveyard near the "Castle" where he is buried. He married (2) DINAH BORDEN 26 Jul 1682 in Providence, RI, daughter of THOMAS BORDEN and MARY HARRIS. She was born 01 Oct 1665 in Newport, RI, and died 18 Dec 1761. Notes for MAJOR THOMAS FENNER: "Upon the 26th day of July in the Year 1682, Thomas Fenner and Dinah Borden both of the Town of Providence were after lawful publication joined together in marriage each with the other by Joseph Jenckes, Assistant (PROV.REC. 5:378)." He took the Oath of Allegiance, May 1671. During the time of King Philip's War, he was one who "staid and went not away." About 1677 his father built a house for him, located about a quarter of a mile from the "Castle." It was a one and one-half storey house with a huge stone fireplace and chimney on the north wall. This design is known as a "stone-ender," although the Major Thomas Fenner house departed from the usual design in that the front door was located in the center of the house, and not offet as was the custom. The house was later enlarged, becoming a two and one-half storey house with two chimneys. The house was passed down for several generations, from Major Thomas to his son the Hon. Joseph (1693-1779); to Joseph's grandson, James (son of Asahel); to James' son Thomas, and then to others outside the family. The house still stands, on a lane at about 1538 Plainfield Road, in what is today Cranston (1978). Thomas was a large landowner, at one point being in possession of 450 acres. He also kept a tavern and a country store, and had talents as a surveyor and a military man as well. He also apparently acted as an attorney in a 1708 case involving Richard Greene and Joseph Waterman. Thomas was a justice and frequently held court in his home. He served as Deputy (1683, 1691, 1695, 1697, 1699, 1705) and was frequently a member of the Town Council between 1698 and 1706. He was Assistant continuously from 1707 to 1717. In 1712 and 1713, he was Major of the Main, being in charge of the garrison on the mainland of the Colony. He made his will 19 February 1718 and died 27 February 1718 at Providence. He and his wife were buried at the Castle. His estate, valued at 433 pounds, included: 2 horses, a silver spoon and cup, 4 mares, 1 colt, 15 cows, a bull, 26 young cattle and 8 swine. HENRY GREENE9 FENNER (JEREMIAH8, BENJAMIN7, JEREMIAH6, RICHARD5, THOMAS4, ARTHUR3, ARTHUR2, THOMAS*1) was born 02 Jun 1818 in Sterling, CT, and died 19 Mar 1890 in Fall River, MA. He married LAURA AMY SMITH 27 Sep 1840, daughter of ARTEMAS SMITH and LUCINA MOWRY. She was born 29 Jun 1815 in Glocester, RI, and died 14 Mar 1890 in Fall River, MA. Notes for HENRY GREENE FENNER: Henry Greene Fenner was apparently influenced by his uncle, John Fenner, to enter the cotton textile business. He became associated with the noted cotton manufacturer, Zachariah Allen, and worked for him in various mills. The Census of 1850 lists Henry G. and his family as residents of North Providence, RI, where he was a clerk. His father died in 1851, whereupon he inherited some of the family lands in Connecticut. He was later to sell these lands to his brothers and sister, selling his one-third interest in the Thayer farm in Sterling to his sister, Susan M. Chappell for $100.00 (This transaction is recorded on 6 April 1865, but it is mentionned in Henry S. Fenner's diary on 20 June 1862.)(STERLING 6:217). He sold a 52 acre tract, with buildings, to his brother Jeremiah L.B. for $75.00 on 28 August 1867 (STERLING 6:303), and that same day sold a 10 acre tract to his brother John B. for $25.00 (STERLING 6:303). Henry G. and his family were at Centerdale in 1852, according to school bills (dated 27 July 1852: 7 weeks at 12.5 cents per week). Henry G. was a strong believer in education and made sure that his sons were well educated. Between 1853 and 1856, the family lived in North Providence and the boys attended school in District 5 (school bills dated 30 July 1853, 11 weeks at 4 cents per; and 1 December 1856, 11 weeks at 6 cents per.). In 1856, they apparently lived at Allendale, as a letter addressed to Henry G. survives. Between 1859 and 1864, the family lived at Georgiaville, RI, and their activities are recorded, in part, in a dairy kept by Henry Smith Fenner. During this period of time, Henry G. apparently was the superintendant of the Georgiaville mill, owned by Z. Allen, and both of the boys were employed in the mill office. The dairy tells of the problem of getting enough water to run the mill during the summer months, and how Henry G. would go to Greenville to ask for more water. During the low water, the mill would be shut down for repairs. On 21 October 1862 the diary tells of a steam engine being used for the first time ("The engine took today about one quarter of the machinery as its load which will help the water considerably.") Then, 28 October 1862, the pond was filled again and the use of the engine was discontinued. The family kept a garden and raised many vegetables. The diary also speaks of "our farm in Glocester" and of going there for hay, apples and chestnuts. The Census of 1865 lists the family as residents of Smithfield, and Henry G.'s occupation as superintendant. In the Fall River, MA, city directory for 1874, Henry G. is listed as the superintendant of the Fall River Print Works, boarding at 349 South Main Street. In the Directory of 1876, he is listed as the superintendant of the Slade Mills, boarding at the same address. In 1880, he has been given the additional title of Treasurer, and he was boarding at 7 North Main Street. Then, in 1882, the directory lists him as living at 34 June Street, with no occupation listed. This listing appears again in 1890. Laura Amy died at Fall River, 14 March 1890, of bronchial pneumonia. Notes for HENRY SMITH FENNER: Henry Smith Fenner was born in Smithfield, lived at Centerdale (North Providence) and attended school there, then lived at Georgiaville. During 1862-1864, he kept a dairy of his daily activities. It is written in magnificent handwriting and contains many interesting comments and insights. Henry Smith was very handy with tools and the diary records his making a sled, a screw driver, a walnut mallet, a potato masher and a set of dominoes (made from mahogany). The diary also reveals several personality traits. Henry S. was apparently something of a hypocondriac, as the diary has numerous references to his health and how he seldom felt well. He was somewhat intolerant of others, when their opinions and actions did not match his, but perhaps this was his youth speaking. Henry S. did the bookkeeping at the Georgia Mills and was in charge of the mill when his father was away. There are a number of references to the shortage of cash money, particularly coinage, during these Civil War years. When coins were available, there was a premium charged of up to 27%. This created problems paying the mill workers, so Henry S. resorted to a system of script money. There is also an interesting note on 31 August 1862, reporting that there was a great scramble to get all of the cloth off the looms, cut and out of the mill before a new national tax went into effect on 1 September. All supplies and finished products went to and from Georgiaville by horse-drawn wagon. Henry S. was an avid reader, and he attempted to keep up on business matters. His note for 9 October 1862: "I have not done much today except read the 'U.S. Tax Payers Manual.' Quite Interesting." There are a number of references to the Civil War: (13 June 1862) "I saw a returned sailor who was on the CONGRESS when captured by the MERRIMAC. His name is E. Morrissey. He tells of destitution in Virginia while he was a prisoner."; (5 August 1862) "Jeremiah Slocum returned home on furlough in hopes of recovering from Rheumatism."; (12 August 1862) "There are a great many scared men about here on account of the prospect of a draft for active service. There are or will be a great number of cripples young old and of all kinds not fit for service."; (25 August 1862) "The canvassing officer is about, looking for men 18-45." ; (9 July 1863) "There is considerable excitement about now in consequence of the Draft which is now going on in the city. Six of our village were drawn." Henry S. was educated in public schools in North Providence. On 25 May 1863, he began to study at Bryant, Stratton and Masons Commercial College in Providence, and commuted from Georgiaville on the daily stage coach. There is no indication as to when this course ended, but Henry S. began another course at the Lapham Institute in Scituate on 30 November 1863. He boarded there during the week, and generally went home on the weekends to do the books at the mill. The studies included: bookkeeping, Latin, Greek, Geometry, reading and Anabasis. The school was apparently very strict, as his note for 8 December 1863 reads: "This day several Scholars were expelled for violating the regulations and some were put on strict probation for walking with the other Sex." In the Census of 1865, Henry S. is listed as a clerk at Smithfield. In 1870, he graduated from Brown University with a Bachelor of Philosophy degree. He was brilliant in mathematics and was offered a professorship at Bates College. He chose to return to the textile business, and managed several mills in Rhode Island including the Union Mill on Main Street in East Greenwich. In 1875, Henry S. went to Fall River, MA, as Superintendant of the Slade Mills (later the Ancona Corp.). The following year he was made Treasurer, a position that he would hold for 27 years. On 12 December 1878, he married Mary Jane Milne at the Baptist Temple in Fall River, and they moved into a house on Middle Street. On 13 September 1879, Henry Milne Fenner was born. Some time after this, there was a fire in the house, and Mary Jane, the baby and the family dog were hustled out of the house and put in a passing hack and sent to 272 June Street, the home of Henry Greene Fenner (where they lived for the remainder of their lives). Their furniture was thrown out of windows. Henry S. was a Director of the Fall River National Bank from 1880 to 1903, a trustee of the Fall River Home for the Aged, a member of the Fall River Common Council, and an active member of the Brown Alumni Association. He was a hard worker and a bug on cleanliness. During his lifetime, he had all of the carpets in the house (which were wall-to-wall carpets) taken up twice a year and taken out to be cleaned, while the help scrubbed the floors on hands and knees. He saw to it that his sons had household and gardening duties. He posed mental arithmetic questions to Henry M. at the dinner table. On 11 March 1903, Henry S. suffered a stroke at work and was partially paralysed. He recuperated at home, but he was never able to resume his duties and had to retire. A third stroke, in 1905, confined him to his room. He died 2 January 1907. He died intestate and insolvent. His son, Henry M., was executor and chose his uncle, Henry D. Milne, as appraiser. The bulk of his assets (44 shares of various Fall River textile concerns) was pledged as collateral on a note. The house, valued at $8150., was sold on 23 July 1907, to John C. Milne, for $5750., and was immediately given to his daughter, Mary Jane Milne Fenner. Henry S. Fenner's obituary, in the DAILY GLOBE, read, in part: "Mr. Fenner was a brilliant man, thoroughly posted in practical manufacturing and during his business career was popular with his associates and those who came into contact with him socially." "At the time he was a member of the city council ... the halls rang with the sound of the voice of Mr. Fenner, who was ever ready to speak upon whatever subject was presented for discussion. His speeches here, as elsewhere, were eloquent and forceful and were given in the most scholarly and brilliant language and would have been read with attention in legislative bodies much higher than that in which they were delivered." "Personally, Mr. Fenner was a most loveable man and always ready to assist those who came to him for advice or instruction and his mind was a store house of information, his retentive memory being a revelation to his friends." The DAILY HERALD's obituary noted: "He was a hard worker, devoting himself unsparingly to any duty which he undertook. He was a companionable man with a keen sense of humor that always made him welcome in social circles." More About HENRY SMITH FENNER: Burial: Swan Point G309 Lot 2, Providence, RI Children of HENRY FENNER and MARY MILNE are: i. HENRY MILNE11 FENNER, b. 13 Sep 1879, Fall River, MA; d. 07 Jan 1943. Notes for HENRY MILNE FENNER: Henry Milne Fenner attended public schools, graduating from B.M.C.Durfee High in 1897. He was honored with the Davis Medal for highest scholarship. He graduated from Brown University in 1901, Phi Beta Kappa, with an A.B. degree. He went to work for his grandfather's newspaper, the FALL RIVER NEWS. He started in a low position on the staff and worked his way up through the ranks. On 3 May 1903, he was given a raise from $12. per week to $14. In 1907, he became the Bedford Street reporter. Then 13 February 1911 he "gave up most street work, except Bedford Street, to become assistant to Emory," the City Editor. He would later become the Telegraph Editor, and was a wizard at handling the reports coming in on the wire in Morse Code. He was also an editorial writer, and turned down opportunities to become City Editor (although he occupied that position during Emory's absences or illnesses) and Editor-In-Chief. When the NEWS merged with the HERALD in 1926, he left the newspaper and founded his own insurance agency. Beginning in 1902 and continuing for fifteen years, Henry M. kept a daily diary. It is somewhat disappointing, in that it only records a few cold, hard facts, and offers almost no commentary on the passing events (The best example is the note for 6 April 1917: "War declared. Mother to Prov."), but it offered a few insights into the events of the day. The diary tells of some important events in the newspaper business in Fall River. A morning edition of the rival HERALD was begun 25 January 1904, but folded 23 April 1904. On 16 March 1906, a 12 page daily edition of the NEWS was published for the first time, using a special press attachment. Then 14 September 1915, a 20 page paper ("biggest yet") was printed for the opening of Fashion Week. Henry M. sent pictures and articles to the New Bedford STANDARD and to the Boston GLOBE, some of which were printed. In 1906 the City Council appropriated $1000. for the purposes of recording the history of the City of Fall River. Henry M. Fenner and Benjamin Buffington were chosen to author the volume and they worked several nights a week for a number of months on the project. A committee of citizens was selected to oversee the work, and to check its authenticity and reliability. Henry M. read the history to them at its completion. The committee approved and on 9 July 1906 the manuscript was sent to Smiley Brothers of New York City to be published. The proofs were returned 1 August 1906, and the printed volumes arrived 4 October 1906. The DAILY GLOBE (7 October 1906): "It is an attractive volume, not in any way bulky. A valuable addition to any library." The rival Daily HERALD (12 October 1906): The book was "prepared under the encouragement of Mayor John T. Coughlin and the City Council." There was "evidence of haste in preparation." And, according to this review, only 400 copies were printed. Henry M.'s own newspaper, the NEWS, perhaps told the story behind the headlines: "doubtless there were distinct limits within which the editor ... performed his work and the history probably does not show what he would have produced had he been free of space and inclination," but notes that it was "a readable and an approximately accurate history." In 1911, the year of the Cotton Centennial, Henry M. edited his original history into a smaller version, a copy of which was presented to President Taft when he visited the city on 23 June 1911. Henry M. lived at home, with his mother, during her lifetime. They were assisted by live-in help, but the diary notes some of the problems with keeping a good staff. In 1904, they were without a cook for four weeks. In 1906, there was no "girl" from September to December, when the "first colored girl entered our employ." Then, in 1908, a series of notations: 7 October: "cook left, intox-- trouble getting her out (The story goes that the family was sitting at the dining room table and the meal was later than usual. There was loud singing in the basement, where the kitchen was located, so Henry M. went to investigate. He found the cook, stark naked and drunk, singing at the top of her lungs.)"; 15 October "new cook arrives."; 22 October "new cook leaves (No.2, series 2)"; 24 October "new cook arrives (No.3, series 2)." Henry M. was a kind and thoughtful man. He stepped into his father's shoes when Henry S. suffered his first stroke in 1903. He began to act as father to the other children, and he paid particular attention to the youngest, George. He accompanied his mother to social events. He handled the details and finances of his sister's wedding. More About HENRY MILNE FENNER: Burial: Swan Point G309 Lot 2, Providence, RI ii. New Milford, PA; d. 28 Dec 1965, Fall River, MA. Notes for JOSEPH ALMY FENNER: Joseph Almy Fenner attended public schools, but was never considered an eager student -- by his own admission "they practically had to burn down Durfee High to get me out!" On 21 June 1903, through the generosity of his uncle, James Chadwick, Joe went to work for the Algonquin Print Works. His temper, always quick to flare, would keep him from rising above the level of supervisor of the Engraving Room. But his fine talents in math and engineering stood him well in the complicated and intricate work of engraving the brass rollers and setting the gears on the printing machines. Joe worked for the Algonquin until it closed in the 1940s. He later did bookkeeping work for Union Hospital. When his brother, Henry M., died, Joe inherited the insurance business. Joe's wife, Lucia, earned a great reputation as a talker. One night when Joe and Lucia 'went calling' on his sister, Laura, and her husband, Richard, Lucia was holding forth for hours. There was an established routine in the Knight household - Sailor, the setter, went walking with Richard every evening before bed time. Several times Sailor paced back and forth in the living room while Lucia was holding forth. Finally Sailor went out into the hall and picked up Lucia's hat and went and placed it in her lap. To her last day Lucia was certain that Richard had trained the dog to do it. More About JOSEPH ALMY FENNER: Burial: Oak Grove, Fall River, MA 83. iii. Notes for LAURA FENNER: Laura Fenner attended Fall River public schools and graduated from B.M.C.Durfee High. Her adolescent years were marred somewhat by her father's stroke and resulting paralysis (in 1903) until his death (in 1907). The Chadwicks helped out whenever they could, taking Laura with them on trips, including a tour of Europe in the summer of 1906, and allowing her to entertain her friends at their house. And Henry M. Fenner was always her big brother. How exactly she and Richard met is unrecorded. The first mention of their courtship is in Henry M.'s diary, July 1-2, 1907, noting that Laura went to East Greenwich. On September 13th of that year, he notes "Knight here for dinner." Laura spent a week in June at East Greenwich the following year. In 1909, the two mothers exchanged visits. Laura announced her engagement on December 11th, 1911. Henry M. handled all of the details of his sister's wedding, from the catering to addressing the invitations, including taking out an $800.00 loan to finance the event. The wedding was on Saturday, February 15th, 1913, at 7:00 PM, in the southeast corner of the parlor of the family's home. The Orpheus Orchestra (piano, violin and cello) played. There were 200 guests.
